DHL first came to know Michael McGrath through its support for his pole2pole Challenge in January 2004 that saw Michael become the first disabled person to reach both North and South Poles. The qualities of teamwork, leadership and achievement that this endeavour symbolised are all attributes important to DHL.
The top 75 managers attended the DHL Senior Managers Business Review from the UK and Ireland. On June 23rd 2004 the conference theme was 'Building Excellence Together'. Michael was asked to close the conference by encapsulating DHL's key business themes within his own unique style. This he did brilliantly.
Michael's preparation for the event was extremely thorough. He did not simply turn up and deliver a set piece speech but spent time carrying out telephone 'interviews' with senior DHL board members beforehand to ensure he thoroughly understood our business and what our objectives and expectations for the day were. In the event, all of the key business messages that had been discussed during the conference itself were expertly and seamlessly woven into Michael's presentation.
The response from the managers present was exceptional – in fact, a spontaneous standing ovation! In short, Michael's unique strength was his ability to link his own very personal circumstances and experiences to the requirements of a modern global organisation like DHL. The result was an inspiring and moving presentation that always made perfect business sense.
