This focus originated from Michael McGrath’s own personal experiences of talking with young people in schools about attitudes to difference, disability, leadership and the importance of having dreams, goals and aspirations.
At the core of this belief lies a call-to-action that provides an inspirational learning platform that is the catalyst for young people to connect with their own potential.
BRINGING EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY TO LIFE
Michael McGrath has muscular dystrophy. He is the only disabled person in the world to have conquered both North and South Poles and was included in The Queen’s 2004 Christmas Day Broadcast that reinforced the importance of diversity as a strength. In valuing difference, education has a vital role to play in bringing equality and diversity to life.
HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE ACHIEVE IN LIFE
Our aim is to deliver a high quality learning experience that highlights the issues of equality, diversity and citizenship in line with the Government’s *Every Child Matters – Change for Children programme. Schools for example are sharing information, working together and teaming up in new ways to help young people achieve in life.
This learning experience has been developed over the past 24 months and directly supports a number of the key measures that the Government has defined as part of the Every Child Matters – Change for Children initiative – these being:
-
Be healthy
-
Stay safe
-
Enjoy and achieve
-
Make a positive contribution
-
Achieve economic well-being
MUSCLES AND MUSCLE FUNCTION
MHF has partnered with Arc Theatre, a professional theatre practitioner. We now require funding for a pilot programme for young people and to create a framework for an innovative drama and science based learning initiative. The programme has been designed to enhance elements of the national curriculum centred on muscles and muscle function.
It will consist of short bite-size drama presentations [45mins approx] with workshops to draw out the learning’s, preceded by lessons leading up to, and after theatrical presentations.
SCIENCE, PE AND GENETICS
MHF is aware of the huge increase in pupils taking GCSE Phys. Ed which plays an increasingly important role in schools today. As a potential cross-curricular project ie. Linking Science and PE Departments, there are robust synergies with the programme subject, which will also include an element of genetics in making the connection between genes, healthy muscles and neuromuscular diseases such as muscular dystrophy.
RICH VEIN OF OPPORTUNITY
Arc Theatre has a long track record of creating, writing and delivering powerful learning programmes for young people in schools. The company uses theatre to engage young audiences with stories and ideas that:
- Touch them emotionally
- Encourage personal reflection
- Promote thinking in new ways
- Enhance individual and collective learning
- Instill confidence and self-belief
By creating performances with dynamic characters that young people can relate to and connect with, offers a rich vein of opportunity for exploring contemporary issues and effecting transformational change in a way that sticks.
