Sir Chris Bonington CBE

Mountaineer, writer & lecturer

When we hear about someone suffering from Muscular Dystrophy, we think of all the difficulties, great and small, that they must meet in their everyday life, and all the limitations and immense frustrations it must impose on them

We certainly don't picture them making epic journeys to the Poles, facing conditions that would be beyond the ability of most of us

So I am hugely impressed by Michael McGrath's achievement and complete determination in reaching the North Pole in April 2002, and more so his resilience, focus and enormous strength of mind regarding his current epic plans to reach the South Pole in January 2004 as part of his commendable objectives for pole2pole, the inaugural event for The Muscular Help Foundation

I wish him and his team the very best of good fortune and hope they will achieve their historical goal and return back to the UK safely

Chris Bonington reached the highest point on earth, the summit of Everest in 1985 at the age of 50, as a member of the Norwegian Everest Expedition. The expedition placed 18 climbers and Sherpas on the summit in three separate ascents, a record for a single expedition

This was possible due to the superb planning and organisation, but most of all, because of the quality of teamwork amongst expedition team members
